Das wichtigste überhaupt ist ein Auto und zwar Vollkasko versichert, die auch Reifen- und Glasschäden abdeckt. Es gibt hier sehr viele Unfälle und noch mehr Pannen wegen Reifenplatzern, denn die Hitze im Sommer schadet den Reifen hier offensichtlich enorm. Öffentliche Verkehrsmittel gibt es zwar wie zum Beispiel die Tri-Rail und auch ein paar Busse fahren, allerdings sind diese schlecht verknüpft.

Passend zum Auto braucht ihr den Sunpass; das ist für die anfallenden Gebühren für Brücken und Highways. Barzahlung an Kassen wie es sie noch bis vor kurzem gab, wurden zurückgebaut. Toll-by-plate (also das Bezahlen über die Nummernschild Erkennung) ist wesentlich teurer. Oftmals wird das doppelte berechnet. Am besten gleich bei der Autovermietung mitbuchen. Meistens sind die Transponder eh schon eingebaut und man hat gar keine andere Wahl. Die Rechnung dafür bezahlt man dann automatisch über die angegebene Kreditkarte.

Für zwei Wochen bei ca 2000 Meilen die ich auf diversen Mautstraßen zurück gelegt habe, waren am Ende knapp 70 Euro fällig!

Ich halte es auch für extrem wichtig, eine Kühlbox zu kaufen und im Auto zu deponieren. Dann hat man immer kalte Getränke und kann auch ein paar Einkäufe gekühlt nach Hause transportieren.

Sehr wichtig sind Rashguards. Man verbrennt sich hier innerhalb von Minuten, wenn man empfindlich ist. Oder man schmiert sich ständig mit teurer Sonnencreme ein und schwitzt dadurch noch mehr.

Kopfbedeckung, fast das wichtigste, wenn man viel draußen unterwegs ist und natürlich zum Schutz der Augen auch eine Sonnenbrille! Ich kann auch die Neck Gaitor nur empfehlen. Das sind so eine Art Schlauchschals, die man so tragen kann, das Nacken und Kopf vor der Sonne geschützt sind. Hab ich beim Tauchen als Kopfhauben Ersatz benutzt. Sehr praktisch!

Klingt alles logisch, aber man sieht in Florida extrem viele Touristen mit starkem Sonnenbrand.

Ohne Kreditkarte geht in den USA gar nichts mehr, ohne diese bekommt man unter anderem auch keinen Mietwagen. Trotzdem sollte man sich auch noch ein bisschen Cash holen. Manchmal kann man eben doch nur Bar zahlen oder auch Trinkgeld wird gerne in Cash genommen.

Headgear, almost the most important thing when you’re out and about a lot, and of course sunglasses to protect your eyes! I can also highly recommend the Neck Gaitor. These are a kind of tubular scarf that you can wear to protect your neck and head from the sun. I used them as a substitute for a hood when diving. Very practical!

It all sounds logical, but you see a lot of tourists with severe sunburn in Florida.

You can’t do anything in the USA without a credit card, and you can’t even get a rental car without one. Nevertheless, you should still get some cash. Sometimes you can only pay in cash or tips are often given in cash.
