Was ist eigentlich „The Oceancleanup „?
Diese Organisation wurde 2013 von dem Niederländer Boyan Slat mit dem Ziel gegründet, die enormen Mengen Plastikmüll aus den Ozeanen zu entfernen.
Für die Organisation arbeiten über 90 Mitarbeiter, ein großer Teil davon an ihrem Hauptsitz in Rotterdam.
Beim Oceancleanup System geht es um ein Sammelsystem, das autonom im Ozean Plastikmüll einsammelt. Mittlerweile -nach einigen Fehlschlägen -funktioniert das System zumindest temporär Recht zuverlässig. Dabei wird nur der Plastikmüll in der oberen Wasserschicht rausgesiebt . Meerestiere sollen dabei nicht zu schaden kommen.
Zeitgleich arbeitet TOC auch an einem System um zu verhindern,das Plastikmüll überhaupt erst in die Ozeane gespült wird. Dieses geschieht größtenteils durch Flüsse.
Grundsätzlich ist das Entfernen von Plastikmüll ein ehrenvolles Vorhaben. Vor allem in den Sozialen Netzwerken wird immer mit den großen Erfolgen geworben. Aus dem entfernten Plastikmüll werden dann Sonnenbrillen hergestellt und verkauft und da man natürlich keine 400 Milliarden Sonnenbrillen braucht, wird der Rest an Land entsorgt. Es gäbe sicher noch andere dauerhaft nutzbare Alltagsgegenstände, die man daraus herstellen könnte.
Wissenschaftler sehen das ganze aus verschiedenen Gründen kritisch. Zum einen werden durch das Einsammeln so noch völlig unerforschte , sogenannte ’schwimmende Inseln‘, zerstört oder beschädigt. Das System kann diese Momentan nicht von Plastikmüll unterscheiden. Die KI wird das sicher in absehbarer Zeit können.
Andere wissenschaftliche Untersuchungen ergaben, das selbst bei extremer Erhöhung der Flotte von TOC bis 2040 maximal 5 Prozent des Plastikmülls entfernt werden können. Dazu kommt das die Herstellung und der Betrieb der Räumschiffe enorme Ressourcen verbrauchen (dieses nennt man auch ökologischer Rucksack).
Der Ansatz ist also grundsätzlich richtig, aber leider ist das System zu ineffizient. Der Ansatz muss in Müllvermeidung liegen. Zumal die Prognosen vorher sagen, das die Produktion von Kunststoffen weiter steigen wird. Solange da nicht gegen gesteuert wird, verschlimmert sich das Plastik Problem zusehends.
Das soll natürlich nicht heißen,das man das TOC einstellen sollte oder das es nichts bringt. Im Ansatz ist es definitiv gut und richtig! Das System muss definitiv noch weiter entwickelt werden und intelligenter werden, was sicher auch passieren wird. Ich denke das TOC ihre Räumschiffe mit Drohnen und hochauflösenden Kameras koppeln wird um effizienter zu werden. Die Frage ist, wann das passieren wird und ob man dafür Investoren findet.
Die Uhr tickt und viel Zeit bleibt uns nicht mehr.
Viel wichtiger ist, das jeder einzelne von uns seinen Plastikfootprint enorm drosseln muss und das sofort. Auf die Politik kann man leider nicht setzten, da diese durch Lobbyisten unterwandert ist und auch viel zu träge ist. Gerade in Brüssel ist man eher im Rückwärtsgang unterwegs und kümmert sich um eher belanglose Dinge. Wenn man nur schaut wie lange es dauert das Shark Finnining zu verbieten, kann man nur dem Kopf schütteln.

What exactly is „The Oceancleanup“?
This organization was founded in 2013 by Dutchman Boyan Slat with the aim of removing the enormous amounts of plastic waste from the oceans.
More than 90 employees work for the organization, many of them at its headquarters in Rotterdam.
The Oceancleanup system is a collection system that autonomously collects plastic waste in the ocean. After a few failures, the system is now working quite reliably, at least temporarily. Only the plastic waste in the upper layer of water is sifted out. Marine animals should not be harmed in the process.
At the same time, TOC is also working on a system to prevent plastic waste from being washed into the oceans in the first place. This is largely done by rivers.
In principle, removing plastic waste is an honorable undertaking. The great successes are always advertised, especially on social networks. The plastic waste that is removed is then used to make and sell sunglasses and, as we don’t need 400 billion pairs of sunglasses, the rest is disposed of on land. There would certainly be other everyday objects that could be made from it that could be used in the long term.
Scientists are critical of the whole thing for various reasons. On the one hand, the collection destroys or damages so-called ‚floating islands‘, which are still completely unexplored. The system is currently unable to distinguish these from plastic waste. AI will certainly be able to do this in the foreseeable future.
Other scientific studies have shown that even with an extreme increase in the TOC fleet, a maximum of 5 percent of plastic waste can be removed by 2040. In addition, the production and operation of the clearing ships consume enormous resources (this is also known as the ecological rucksack).
So the approach is basically correct, but unfortunately the system is too inefficient. The approach must be to avoid waste. Especially as forecasts predict that the production of plastics will continue to increase. As long as this is not counteracted, the plastic problem will continue to worsen.
Of course, this is not to say that TOC should be discontinued or that it is useless. It is definitely a good and correct approach! The system definitely needs to be developed further and become more intelligent, which will certainly happen. I think that TOC will couple its clearing ships with drones and high-resolution cameras to become more efficient. The question is when this will happen and whether investors will be found.
The clock is ticking and we don’t have much time left.
More importantly, each and every one of us must reduce our plastic footprint enormously and do so immediately. Unfortunately, we can’t rely on politicians, as they are infiltrated by lobbyists and are far too sluggish. Brussels in particular is in reverse gear and tends to deal with trivial matters. If you only look at how long it takes to ban shark finning, you can only shake your head.
